INSPIRATION: There are roughly 200 major art museums in the United States. Places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty in Los Angeles are home to some of the world’s most significant art collections. But here’s the reality: few people ever get the chance to experience them. This is the case for many reasons, but the most pertinent of them are proximity and accessibility. High costs, and a lack of exposure to these offerings, make visiting these cultural treasures a privilege many simply can’t afford. That’s where Trippy comes in. Trippy is a groundbreaking virtual reality experience that brings the world’s greatest art museums right to you—wherever you are. From students in rural communities to those who simply can’t travel, TRIPPY ensures that art belongs to everyone—not just those who can venture into a major cities and experience it themselves. With over 50 works of art by internationally renowned artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, this collection could be truly world-class. Inspired by our immediate environment, today we offer you a sample of actual art pieces fetched from our hosting university MIT, and seated within our newly created digital world. It exemplifies the versatility and effectiveness of content creation and pays homage to the artistic and intellectual convergencies that make this community internationally acclaimed and respected.

WHAT WAS USED: Using state-of-the-art technology from Meta, Scanniverse, and other AR/VR developers, we’re able to scan and digitize art pieces in stunning detail, creating completely immersive experiences. Imagine walking through the Louvre or the MoMA, seeing the art just as you would in person—but from your living room. And for those without access to a VR headset, Trippy is also available via web and iPad, making it accessible to anyone with an internet browser.

WHAT WE COULD'VE DONE BETTER: We went through quite a few pivots before we agreed upon this concept. By the time we decided to go in this direction, there was only 24 hours left in the hack. We did fairly well within the time span but we understand going forward how important it is to stand firm on an idea when your pressed for time.
