Inspiration# TRIEL — Your Personal AI Angel

Inspiration

What if an AI assistant felt less like a tool and more like a friendly little companion?

TRIEL began with that question.

I wanted to create a desktop AI companion that could listen, speak, and interact with users through an expressive animated character.

The name TRIEL belongs to an original angel character whose purpose is to help humans understand one another. Inspired partly by the appearance of Ophanim, TRIEL combines angelic imagery with a cheerful, curious personality.

My goal is to make AI interaction feel more welcoming, expressive, and accessible while keeping user privacy in mind.

What It Does

TRIEL is a locally powered desktop AI companion designed to interact with users through text, voice, and character animations.

The project includes:

  • An original animated desktop character with blinking eyes, moving wings, and facial expressions.
  • A local conversational AI system using Ollama and Gemma 3 4B.
  • A voice synthesis system using Supertonic, with the F1 voice selected to match TRIEL's cheerful personality.
  • A modular design intended to support additional interaction features.

Features currently being developed include:

  • Voice activation using TRIEL's name.
  • Offline speech recognition.
  • Korean and English voice interaction.
  • Character reactions synchronized with speech.
  • Improved background operation and Windows integration.

The long-term vision is an AI companion that can help users communicate, learn, and interact with their computers more naturally.

How I Built It

I developed TRIEL using Python and PySide6, with AI-assisted coding tools such as OpenAI Codex.

Rather than relying on a premade avatar, I created the character's visual assets myself, including multiple facial expressions, eye directions, blinking frames, mouth shapes, and wing animations.

For conversational AI, I explored locally available language models through Ollama. After comparing different options, I chose Gemma 3 4B for its conversational style and Korean-language performance.

I also experimented with different text-to-speech voices to find one that suited TRIEL's personality.

A major design priority was local processing. I wanted the application to remain useful without requiring users to send their conversations to external AI services.

Challenges I Faced

One of the biggest challenges was balancing performance and functionality on a laptop with 8 GB of RAM.

Running a language model, speech synthesis, character animation, and eventually speech recognition on the same computer requires careful resource management.

Another challenge was integrating multiple independent systems into a responsive desktop application without interrupting the character's animations.

I also had to experiment with different AI models and voice presets to find a combination that felt natural and matched the character.

As someone learning software development through hands-on experimentation, I spent considerable time testing, debugging, and refining the application with AI-assisted development tools.

What I Learned

This project taught me that building an AI application involves much more than connecting a language model to a chat interface.

I learned about desktop application architecture, animation systems, local language models, speech synthesis, performance limitations, and the importance of testing.

I also learned how to use AI coding tools as development partners while making my own decisions about design, functionality, and user experience.

Most importantly, I discovered how an original character and a technical system could come together to create a more personal way of interacting with AI.

What's Next

My next steps are to complete voice activation, improve speech synchronization, and expand Korean and English interaction.

I also plan to continue refining TRIEL's animations and making the application easier to launch and use.

Ultimately, I hope TRIEL can become a friendly, privacy-conscious AI companion that makes technology feel a little more human.

TRIEL is not just an assistant with an avatar. It is an experiment in making human–AI interaction feel alive.
