Inspiration

This piece was sparked by my long-time love for classic zombie cinema—especially the work of George A. Romero, the grandfather of the modern zombie myth. Trick or Treat takes the simple, playful question of Halloween and flips it into an existential moment: for one day a year, the dead rise… and we become their candy.

What It Does

The short film reimagines the Halloween tradition through a dark, ironic lens. It blends horror, tension, and a touch of humor to create a world where the trick-or-treat dynamic is reversed. The result is a fast, atmospheric AI-powered tribute to zombie culture.

How We Built It

The entire project was created using AI tools, each chosen for a specific role in the production pipeline:

  • Scriptwriting: Written manually to maintain tone, pacing, and narrative punch.
  • Visuals:
    • Most frames were generated and animated in Midjourney.
    • One particular shot was built and animated with Grok Imagine.
  • Soundtrack: Composed in Suno, inspired by carnival themes and haunted-house aesthetics.
  • Voiceover: Designed in ElevenLabs to create a chilling, uncanny narrator.
  • Editing: Final assembly and timing adjustments were done in CapCut, which provided exactly the balance and control needed for a tight one-minute cut.

Challenges We Ran Into

Crafting visuals that were both realistic and terrifying, but still clean and aesthetically coherent, was a major challenge.
Another difficulty was compressing the entire idea into a single, impactful minute without losing narrative clarity or emotional rhythm.
And, of course, generating enough shots to choose the “perfect” ones - AI gives you infinite options, which is both a blessing and a chaos generator.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

I managed to keep the visuals cohesive, eerie, and cinematic while maintaining a polished look.
The blend of tools came together more smoothly than expected, and the final cut feels tight, intentional, and fun in a dark way.

What We Learned

I learned that:

  • AI lets you produce endless variations until you find the right frame.
  • When you’re the one making the zombie film, the monsters become much less scary.
  • With the right structure, AI tools can complement each other beautifully in a full production workflow.

What's Next for Trick Or Treat

Great question.
This might become a new tradition - creating a fresh Halloween horror short every year. If Trick or Treat is the first chapter, there’s a whole haunted universe waiting to be built.
