Inspiration
With Halloween coming up in a few weeks, there really wasn't any Halloween-themed games or movies that we heard of that would be releasing soon. To fill that gap in the void we made Trick Or Treat! A quick game to be played as we wait for Halloween.
What it does
Trick or Treat is a platformer game where the player has to collect a minimum of 12 candies per night. After night 1, skeletons start to spawn. 1 skeleton spawns every night, and if the player hits the skeleton the player dies.
How we built it
The game was built using a HTML5 game framework called Phaser. We built the game using JavaScript and the website was made using HTML and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
- Creating a custom sprite sheet for the player. The first time we tried the sprite was a black box.
- Figuring out how to add sprites to the scene in a way we wanted. It was difficult to place platforms and the finishing house in a way that a) made sense and b) looked okay.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to have built a game that works, with a rudimentary scoring system and enemies moving around the screen that you have to dodge.
What we learned
We learned how to create custom sprite sheets and how to use Phaser 3 to make a simple online game
What's next for Trick Or Treat
- Making the game multiplayer
- Creating a global high score system
- Adding a health and shooting system
- Add dynamically generated levels
- Adding different types of candies
- Make it become a horror game to better fit the "creepy-ness" of Halloween
- Add a store at the end of each level to provide a use for the candy collected
