Inspiration

I was inspired by the difficulty of objectively tracking gradual changes in hair density and hairline position. Photos taken at different times can look different because of lighting, angle, distance, or hairstyle, making visual comparison unreliable.

The Idea

TrichoAI explores whether AI and computer vision can help quantify changes in standardized scalp and hairline images over time.

The goal is to develop a tool that can provide measurable information about hair coverage and hairline changes rather than relying only on subjective visual comparison.

How I Plan to Build It

I plan to develop the project as an AI-powered application that processes standardized scalp images and extracts quantitative features related to hair coverage and hairline position. These measurements can then be compared across images taken at different time points.

The project is intended as a monitoring and research-oriented tool, not a medical diagnostic system.

What I Hope to Learn

Through this project, I want to learn how computer vision and AI can be applied to a real biomedical problem, including image processing, model development, evaluation, and communicating quantitative results clearly.

Challenges

A major challenge will be dealing with differences in lighting, camera angle, distance, hairstyle, and image quality. Designing a standardized imaging process will therefore be an important part of the project.

Another challenge will be determining whether the measurements produced by the system are actually meaningful rather than simply reflecting differences between photographs.

Future Development

If the initial prototype is successful, I would like to evaluate it with a larger dataset and investigate whether its measurements can be compared with established methods of assessing hair density and hairline changes.
