Inspiration
William & Mary students do not have a standardized way to create and customize a multi-year plan for their major(s)/minor(s) of choice. Students oftentimes have scattered or disorganized methods to plan out classes, and have to navigate between multiple platforms ("what-if" tab on Degree Works, PATH, course catalogs) which can take a lot of time and effort to plan out.
What it does
TribeAdvisor is an AI chatbot that takes a student's transcript and advises them on future classes to take for their major, reminds them of their remaining COLL requirements (other classes needed for a W&M degree), and creates a roadmap of the future and past classes taken. Students are then able to customize their roadmap to play around and plan out future semesters.
How we built it
We built TribeAdvisor using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. To get the W&M course information, we wrote Python scripts to scrape information from the catalog websites. TribeAdvisor uses the Gemini API.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to automate the scraping process so that the AI could get any course from PATH (course catalog) based on subject, attribute, etc. on demand. However, this proved to be quite complicated given the large amount courses offered at this school, so we chose to only take data for certain subjects/attributes (200 ALV, 200 NQR, etc.) to provide for the AI instead.

What's next for TribeAdvisor
Expand to cover more majors/minors, develop a working web scraper for PATH.
