How we built it
We created a made-up natural disaster, #DisasterMichelle, and wrote tweets of various distress levels asking for help. Click here to see our #DisasterMichelle tweets.
Inspiration
In the burgeoning age of technological advancement, victims of natural disasters often resort to social media to solicit aid in their time of need. In recent natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey, we have seen Tweets from people trapped in dire situations.
What it does
To optimize the efficiency of first responder rescue missions, we have created an interface that ranks each Tweet calling for help based on level of urgency. Using our web app, first responders can more effectively determine which Tweet requires the most urgent attention. This app works in multiple languages so it can used in other countries as well!
Future directions
We could add a map to display the location of Geotagged Tweets. We could add a word cloud to identify the most frequently occurring key words in Tweets during a disaster.
