Inspiration
We were inspired by apps like Uber and Lyft as well as the NYU Safe Ride app.
What it does
Our app is built on a real-time database and already supports several users. People request walking partners for themselves for their long trek home after a late night of studying. People are given both privacy and security, as they are told to meet up at a potential (safe) meeting spot and all users must be students at Manhattan colleges.
How we built it
To build this app, we used the Google Maps API, the firebase real-time database, react native, as well as Figma for the design.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into several challenges, the biggest one stemming from 3 of our 4 members not understanding how to use React or Figma. We also ran into trouble converting from React to Figma to layer both design and functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how much we were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. Furthermore, we are proud of how we were able to bring together all of our skill sets and work together as a team, even though we were near strangers before the hackathon began.
What we learned
We learned how to implement the Google Maps API and 3 of our members learned how to code in React for the first time. We also learned a lot about Figma and the dedication required to get an app up and running (including several stages of debugging).
What's next for Trek
In the future, we plan to verify students with school IDs, work on the matching algorithm, add more personalization features, and work with the design and user-friendliness of the app. We would also like to expand to Android as well, as the four of us only used iOS during the actual hackathon.
