Inspiration
The National Champion Trees are like a Tree Hall of Fame, but they are really inaccessible.
What it does
It groups trees by species and county to allow the casual arborist to see these amazing trees. It also shows Tree-N-A facts about the tree's genetic potential.
How we built it
We built it using the Flask Python API and HTML, with some database scraping done in Python.
Challenges we ran into
The AFC does not release the exact location of the trees, which makes it difficult for location based mapping, but is something that could easily be remedied with just more information. The same goes with the genetic potential of the trees, we just needed more data to work with, hence the mockup of the Tree-N-A facts feature.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a working database of all Alabama Champion trees, and ideas on where to take this project next if we receive additional data and information.
What we learned
How to use the Flask Python API, and HTML encoding.
