Inspiration
Our project was designed for the purpose of getting people excited about planting trees and making environmental initiatives more appealing. We are students studying in environment and we know the struggle of getting people to care about green initiatives so this project was supposed to address the problem of global deforestation by providing a user friendly hub for general information and ways they could take action against this problem, all while incorporating a 'game' or 'challenge ' aspect to reforestation.
What it does
This project is an interactive game/challange that tracks a users tree-planting efforts on a worldwide map. The goal of the challenge is to donate to as many countries reforestation efforts as possible in order to “fill” the map. Users can view a countries individual page, where they will find relevant info about the countries vegetation, fun facts and get access to organizations whom you can support in order to highlight the country on the map. Our goal when we made this app was to provide info about a countries environment and to encourage contributions to reforestation efforts.
How we built it
We used python and html as well as integrated an svg world map as the main component of this project. The design is simple enough, the index page acts as the main page which contains the interactive map and links to the created individual countries “homepage” where you can access the donation links for tree planting efforts in said country, and then record your progress.
Challenges we ran into
Getting started was a little hard, we’ve never coded in HTML and this was also our first hackathon submission, we had a hard time creating and downloading the right modules and technologies was a bit of a learning curve. Hosting it locally and using local storage was also hard for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The layout, text boxes, highlight effects and the color schemes were all pretty laborious to get working, so we’re pretty happy on how that turned out, also just having a functioning prototype at the end of it all is awesome considering it’s or first ever HTML project.
What's next for Tree Planter Tracking App
We plan to expand the map to include more countries, improve data visualization, and maybe host it on an actual server so that people don’t have to go through the process of downloading anything.
