Inspiration
Watching a family member go through cancer treatment, we saw how hard it is to keep track of symptoms, remember questions for doctors, and understand medical jargon. We wanted to build something that makes this journey feel less overwhelming.
What it does
Treatment Companion is a gentle daily guide for cancer patients. It lets you:
- Track symptoms on a simple 1-5 scale
- See patterns over 14 days (e.g. "fatigue peaks 3 days after chemo")
- Build a question list for upcoming appointments
- Look up terms in plain language
- Print a summary to bring to your doctor
How we built it
Built with Go for the backend and vanilla HTML/CSS/JS for the frontend — no frameworks, no dependencies, just clean code that works. The symptom data is stored in a simple JSON file, and patterns are detected with a rolling average algorithm.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a UI that feels calm and non-clinical for patients who are already stressed
- Keeping the app simple while still useful — balancing features vs. overwhelm
- Making the app accessible for users who may have fatigue or vision issues
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working symptom tracker with real pattern detection in under two weeks
- Designed a printable summary that helps patients communicate with their doctors
- Kept the codebase small and readable — no frameworks, just the essentials
What we learned
- How to design software for people in vulnerable situations
- The importance of accessibility and calm UI in healthcare apps
- How much you can accomplish with vanilla HTML/CSS/JS and Go
What's next for Treatment Companion
- Mobile app version for easy bedside use
- Integration with common patient portals (MyChart, etc.)
- Multi-language support
- Caregiver accounts so family can help track
- Export to PDF for doctor visits ## Challenges we ran into
