Inspiration
This app was heavily inspired by Denae Ford’s keynote and the theme of the hackathon: superheroes and how we can be our own superheroes. It is easier to feel inspired by a powerful message soon after it is said than consistently acting on it. This app is meant to help people track their accomplishments and remind them to reward themselves for their hard work.
What it does
Users will set a timer in the app to be prompted at the end of the day with the question: What did you do today? Then users are able to input text detailing what their accomplishments for the day were. The app saves what the users input as a list and adds entries to a database. At the end of the week, users are presented with a list of everything they accomplished that week and reminded to treat themselves with a customizable treat of their choice.
How we built it
We used Android Studio to start building the app. We emulated an android device to aid us in development. We also spent time looking into Meteor, which deals with front and back end. We considered using these languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Java.
Challenges we ran into
Based on our team’s skills, we spent a lot of time determining which tools we should use to prototype the app. We re-started development several times and got decently far in both Android Studio and Meteor. There were compatibility issues with several team members’ computers and finding a way to collaboratively work on and share code with these platforms were also challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We put a lot of thought into how to best convey the meaning behind the app and execute it. We wanted it to be inclusive so we thought about how a blind person might still be able to use the app and added a design component to allow audio entries. We also wanted to word the prompts carefully to be “what did you do today” rather than “what did you accomplish” so as to avoid inciting anxiety in users.
What we learned
Soft skills such as time management and each of us learned about some new tools.
What's next for Treat Yo Self
We look forward to implementing our design and seeing the full product come to life.
