Inspiration

Our recent trip to Costa Rica for an AI research conference sparked the idea for Treasure Trials: Pirate Parkour. Meeting Meta’s VP of Research inspired us to explore VR, while Costa Rica’s lush greenery and stunning beaches captivated us. We wanted to combine the beauty of nature with cutting-edge technology, leading to the creation of Treasure Trials, a parkour adventure game set on a vibrant tropical island. The game reflects our goal to immerse players in an exciting world inspired by the breathtaking scenery and innovative spirit we experienced.

What it does

Treasure Trials: Pirate Parkour is an exhilarating parkour-style adventure game where up to eight players can race each other through 13 unique obstacles. Compatible with mobile, desktop, and VR, the game begins on a pirate ship in the open ocean, setting the stage for an exciting journey to a treasure-filled cave. Along the way, players can socialize, collaborate, and make choices together, enhancing the shared adventure. To keep the competition fierce and fun, Treasure Trials features a dynamic leaderboard and engaging quests, encouraging players to challenge themselves and each other as they race toward victory.

How we built it

We built Treasure Trials: Pirate Parkour using Meta’s VR and Desktop editors, with tremendous support from Meta’s Horizon Creator Program and its incredible community. This project was our first experience developing for Meta Horizon Worlds—and even our first time using VR! The steep learning curve was made intuitive and productive thanks to the fantastic guidance and resources provided by the meta community. A special shoutout goes to Laex05 on Discord, whose support made a huge difference in overcoming challenges. The encouragement and expertise we received turned this hackathon into a truly rewarding and enjoyable experience, making our journey into VR development unforgettable.

Challenges We Encountered

  • As first-time VR developers, adapting to 3D space was a significant challenge. We had to learn spatial design, object alignment, and how to create immersive environments.
  • Implementing a real-time leaderboard required us to quickly learn TypeScript, handle complex logic, and troubleshoot to ensure accurate scoring.
  • Optimizing the game for mobile devices was tricky, requiring adjustments for different input methods and performance limitations while keeping a smooth user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We quickly learned to design and create immersive environments in 3D.
  • Implementing real-time tracking and competitive elements was a key challenge.
  • Crafting a unique and engaging world required creativity and attention to detail.
  • Experiencing VR for the first time expanded our design and interaction capabilities.
  • We learned new skills and overcame challenges to bring our vision to life.
  • Connecting with the Meta VR & MHCP Community: Engaging with the supportive Meta VR and Horizon Creator Program community helped us troubleshoot, learn, and grow throughout the process.

What we learned

  • We mastered the fundamentals of creating immersive 3D environments.
  • We gained hands-on experience with scripting, 3D models, and the technical aspects of VR games.
  • We learned how to design engaging gameplay and balance mechanics for a fun experience.
  • We explored how to enhance the atmosphere with music and sound effects.
  • The Meta VR and Horizon Creator community provided invaluable guidance and resources.
  • We learned how to incorporate social features to enhance player interaction and collaboration.

What's next for Treasure Trials: Pirate Parkour

Next for Treasure Trials: Pirate Parkour, we plan to expand the game with more maps and obstacles, offering players new challenges and environments to explore. We’re excited to add fresh, dynamic locations that keep the gameplay engaging and give players more variety in their adventures. Each new map will be carefully designed to enhance the excitement and complexity of the parkour experience. In addition to new content, we aim to increase the number of users playing the game. By promoting the game through social media, collaborating with influencers, and engaging with the Meta VR and Horizon Creator communities, we hope to grow our player base and create a thriving, active community. Our goal is to make the game even more enjoyable and competitive for players worldwide.

We hope you enjoy our game!
