Inspiration
The inspiration for Treasure of Reddit came from the concept of gamifying exploration and community engagement. The idea was to create an interactive, map-based game that mirrors the thrill of treasure hunting while celebrating the quirks and culture of Reddit.
What it does
Treasure of Reddit is a procedurally generated treasure hunting game where players explore a vast map to uncover hidden treasures. Each treasure is themed after iconic Reddit elements, such as "Reddit Gold Coin" or "Moderator's Shield." Players use hints and solve puzzles to locate treasures, with their progress saved across sessions. It’s a fun way to engage with Reddit’s culture in an entirely new medium.
How we built it
We built the game using a combination of: Devvit framework for seamless integration with Reddit. Procedural generation algorithms for map creation and treasure placement. Custom UI components for an engaging, mobile-friendly user experience. Redis for persistent data storage, ensuring user progress is saved. A seeded randomization system to create consistent but unique gameplay for each user.
Challenges we ran into
Data consistency: Ensuring treasures were procedurally generated but deterministic for each user was tricky. We had to refine our randomization logic and map design. Performance: Rendering large maps while maintaining responsiveness on mobile devices required optimization. Integration with Reddit APIs: Adapting to Reddit’s ecosystem and the constraints of the Devvit environment posed initial hurdles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fully functional procedural map generator. Designing a visually appealing, minimalist treasure map that runs smoothly on mobile devices. Successfully implementing a seeded randomization system. Crafting 100 unique, Reddit-themed treasures to keep the game fresh and engaging.
What we learned
The importance of balancing randomness and structure in game design. Advanced optimization techniques for UI rendering in constrained environments. The power of collaboration in adapting tools like Redis and Devvit to create innovative solutions. New insights into gamification and how it can enhance user interaction with platforms like Reddit.
What's next for Treasure of Reddit
Multiplayer mode: Allow users to compete or collaborate in finding treasures. Community integration: Introduce treasures tied to specific subreddits and their cultures. Expanded puzzles and lore: Add deeper narratives and more complex challenges for players. Mobile app version: Optimize the game for native mobile platforms to expand accessibility.
Treasure of Reddit has only just begun its journey, and we're excited to see where it leads!
