What it does

Tray Trash Talk is the ultimate San Francisco State University food forum! Thumbs up the hits and thumbs down the misses. Leave hot takes your fellow students need to see. No food is safe! If it's on your plate it's fair game!

How we built it

The app is built using the Next.js framework. The front-end is built using React Components and Tailwind CSS. We used Azure SQL for our database and Next.js API routes to interact with the database.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first attempt at making a group project for a Hackathon. We faced a lot of challenges, but we definitely learned a lot along the way. Near the beginning of the project we faced a couple logistic issues. We struggled making time to meet and figuring out how to collaborate effectively, however we worked out these issues as the month progressed. We also faced problems with our database. Originally we tried using Prisma ORM, but then decided to switch to Azure late into the project when we realized Prisma didn't fit our needs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Andre is proud of the web scraper he designed. The web scraper gets data about the menu for the current day from the cafeteria website. It was his first time making a web scraper and it turned out really good.

What we learned

We learned how to make web scrapers, how to interact with a database, and how to effectively work with a team to create a project.

What's next for Tray Trash Talk

We believe that the app has a lot of potential. In the future we might implement more features such as food nutrition information and historical ratings. We also wanted to turn the app into a mobile app to make the app more accessible to students. If the app becomes popular enough it could even become a useful tool for the cafeteria itself. The cafeteria could adjust their menu based on reviews from our app.
