🚘 About the Project: TravelSync
🔹 Inspiration
Group road trips are fun, but coordinating them is not. During a recent multi-car trip with friends, we constantly lost track of each other's location, made unplanned stops, and had no simple way to stay synced on the road. This experience sparked the idea for TravelSync a real-time coordination tool for group travel in multiple vehicles.
The goal was simple: make group journeys smoother, more connected, and less stressful.
🔹 What I Built
TravelSync is a web app that allows multiple users traveling in separate cars to:
- 📍 Share real-time locations on an interactive map
- 🗺️ Set and update a common destination
- ⛽ Add, remove, or vote on stop locations (e.g., fuel, food, breaks)
- 🔄 Instantly sync all changes across the group via the cloud
The app is mobile-first, lightweight, and designed for use while on the move.
🔹 How I Built It
- Frontend: React with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive UI
- Backend: Firebase for:
- Realtime Database (live location updates)
- Authentication (anonymous or Google login)
- Firestore (trip and stop data)
- Maps: Google Maps JavaScript API for displaying users and destinations
- Location Tracking: Geolocation API in the browser with periodic updates
All updates are synced in real time across users, so everyone stays on the same page—literally.
🔹 What I Learned
- How to integrate and manage real-time data streams using Firebase
- Efficiently using Google Maps API for multi-user location tracking
- Designing UX for drivers/passengers—focusing on simplicity and clarity
- The importance of handling edge cases like permission denial or GPS loss gracefully
🔹 Challenges I Faced
- ⚠️ Real-time syncing: Keeping location data updated for multiple users without lag or collision
- 🔒 Privacy & Safety: Ensuring location data is only visible to the right people and can be turned off easily
- 📱 Mobile usability: Designing an interface that’s simple enough to glance at while traveling, yet powerful enough for group coordination
- 🌐 Network issues: Handling unstable or lost internet connection during a trip
🚀 Final Thoughts
TravelSync turned a real-world problem into a practical, enjoyable solution. It bridges the gap between physical travel and digital coordination—making road trips smarter, safer, and more fun.
