Inspiration

I was inspired by platforms like letterboxd and Goodreads that allow users to record and share their own reviews of books and movies, as well as see others' reviews. Platforms like these are useful because they double as both offline records of the user's years of movie-watching/reading and as online social media allowing them to discover recommendations from friends, people they follow, and the overall user-base.

What it does

travelr is an app that allows users to save their own and discover others' travel plans. Users can create their own "journeys" that display details such as location, time, cost, number of days, as well as extra notes written by the user per event. Upon creating a journey, users have record of it themselves, as well as the option to share with their friends and the rest of the user-base. Thus other travelrs can browse for journeys that interest them, with the ability to like and save them for later as with other social media sites.

How we built it

The app started as a collection of notes detailing what I thought it should be, including the tabs and general features. I then moved onto hand sketching the basic layout of each screen, before fully fleshing them out in Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Given I don't have too much experience with Figma, there was a definite learning curve in terms of translating the image in my head and on paper into what's on the screen, and it took some time to get the hang of all the features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Just being able to start with just an idea for an app and end with multiple, detailed screens. For the most part, the app looks like how I imagined it at the beginning of the process which I am proud of.

What we learned

There is a design process for a reason and it should probably be followed. I was eager to jump into the high-fidelity design in Figma and for the most part skipped on making the low-fidelity screens digitally. This resulted in a lot of staring at the screen thinking of where things should go.

What's next for travelr.

There are definitely more features that need designing, including a share button, other user profiles, etc. that I couldn't get to due to time. I would go back and finish those up, as well as polish what's already there.
