Inspiration

TravelLens was inspired by a simple but common problem: most travel mistakes happen because travelers arrive unprepared. Cultural misunderstandings, safety risks, and lack of local awareness often turn exciting trips into stressful experiences. As students and travelers ourselves, we realized that while travel apps focus on booking and navigation, very few focus on education before travel. We wanted to build a platform that helps people learn before they go, making travel safer, more respectful, and more meaningful for both travelers and destinations.

What it does

TravelLens is an education‑first tourism platform that helps users understand destinations before visiting them. It combines an interactive map of Nepal with live location awareness, destination details, weather and safety status, cultural do’s and don’ts, and immersive 360°/VR previews. The platform intelligently adapts to two user types—conscious travelers who want real‑time information and explorers who prefer gamified learning with badges and achievements—ensuring a personalized and engaging experience.

How we built it

We built TravelLens using a modern web stack with a strong focus on UI/UX and performance. The platform integrates interactive maps, live location simulation, and immersive media experiences. For AI‑powered features such as smart recommendations, contextual learning, and dynamic content generation, we integrated the Gemini 3 API. We used Antigravity to enhance and extend our frontend codebase efficiently, allowing rapid iteration and seamless AI integration.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was balancing education and engagement without overwhelming users. We also had to carefully design features so that safety information felt integrated into exploration rather than appearing as a separate, intimidating section. Optimizing immersive content like VR and 360° experiences for different device capabilities was another technical challenge we had to thoughtfully address.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We’re proud of creating a clear, focused solution that doesn’t try to do everything, but solves one real problem well—pre‑travel education. Successfully integrating AI into a meaningful user flow, designing an adaptive experience for different traveler types, and presenting complex safety and cultural data in a simple, intuitive way are achievements we value highly as a team.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how important clarity and focus are in product design, especially during hackathons. We gained hands‑on experience integrating AI APIs like Gemini, improving UX through user segmentation, and collaborating effectively under time constraints. Most importantly, we learned how technology can be used responsibly to promote safer and more respectful tourism.

What’s next for TravelLens

Next, we plan to expand TravelLens with real‑time data integrations, deeper AI‑driven personalization, and support for more countries beyond Nepal. We also aim to enhance immersive learning with richer VR content and partner with local tourism boards to ensure accurate, up‑to‑date information. Our long‑term goal is to make TravelLens a global standard for education-first travel.
