Inspiration

travelino aims to make you go on holidays to places, you didn't know you'll like them, you didn't know where they are or you didn't recognize as possible holiday destination. Discover the world with your friends!

What it does

The application is able to scan photos or screenshots of sights or landscapes the user gives to it and tell the user where the sight or landscape is. For this the Google Cloud Vision and Google Maps Geocoding is used. But even more travelino also gives you a list of hotels near to the location by using the Check24 Hotel API. If some of the found hotels don't fit to you, no problem, you can filter the hotels by trip details. Furthermore travelino can find places you could like because of other places you liked or have been insterested in before. As this isn't enough, it also can tell you which places your friends and idols on instagram visited, liked and enjoyed. You can even tell travelino which of your instagram friends and idols shall be ignored at this part, if some of them are posting fake holidays. In a nutshell, travelino can present you a holiday you haven't thought of before and we are pretty sure you'll love it.

How we built it

The frontend was implemented with html and css and then wrapped into iOS, android and webapplications by Apache Cordova. The backend is a spring boot application that uses Google Cloud Vision, Google Maps Geocoding API and your instagram profile and many more.

Challenges we ran into

At some points the frontend was exhausting because it didn't want to look the same on different platforms. In the backend we struggeled with different problems while using the Google APIs.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

Well, just take a look at travelino and you'll know what we are proud of!

What we learned

Google Cloud Vision is really powerful but also quite intimidating what is possible with it. All in all Google Cloud offers some pretty amazing features.

What's next for travelino

To ensure the quality of travelino one of the next steps would be adding some test coverage both in frontend and backend.

Additionally we thought of different possible extension points. One of these is adding some additional information about your destination, like the distances to airports or train station. Further in that direction, by using the QPX Express API it would be prossible to even search some flights for you. Or the scanning of your instagram feed could be made more efficient and precise with filters. The application could be extended by some machine learning alogrithms to present you more hotels you like and less you don't like.
