Planning a trip can be stressful and time-consuming. We created TravelGenie to make travel planning simple, personalized, and fun. With AI-powered suggestions and a “see-before-you-go” experience, travelers can effortlessly discover destinations, activities, and hidden gems—all in one place.
What it does
TravelGenie is an AI-powered travel assistant that helps users plan trips effortlessly. It allows users to:
- Visualize Destinations: See previews of places before visiting, including landmarks, activities, and local attractions.
- Personalized Recommendations: Get tailored suggestions for flights, accommodations, and experiences based on preferences.
- Trip Itinerary Creation: Automatically generate day-by-day travel plans to make the trip smooth and organized.
- Discover Hidden Gems: Explore lesser-known spots and experiences that fit the traveler’s interests.
- Save and Share Plans: Users can save itineraries and share them with friends or family.
How we built it
TravelGenie is a web-based AI travel assistant built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It integrates a GPT open-source model to provide personalized travel suggestions, answer user questions about destinations, and generate automated itineraries. The app also uses travel APIs to fetch real-time information on flights, hotels, and activities, allowing users to visualize destinations and plan trips seamlessly.
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating AI with Real-Time Data: Combining the GPT model with live travel APIs was challenging, as we needed to ensure recommendations were accurate and up-to-date.
- Personalization: Making the AI suggestions truly tailored to individual preferences required careful handling of user inputs and fine-tuning the GPT responses.
- Visualizing Destinations: Creating a smooth “see-before-you-go” experience with images, maps, and suggested routes required optimizing load times and interactive UI design.
- Scalability: Ensuring the app could handle multiple users simultaneously while generating itineraries and AI responses without lag was a key technical hurdle.
- *Balancing AI Creativity and Accuracy: We had to ensure GPT’s suggestions were helpful and realistic, not just imaginative, especially for travel logistics.

What we learned
While building TravelGenie, we gained valuable experience integrating a GPT open-source model into a web application to provide personalized travel recommendations. We learned how to effectively fetch and manage real-time travel data from multiple APIs and how to design an interactive, responsive, and user-friendly interface for complex functionalities. The project also taught us important lessons in problem-solving, such as balancing AI creativity with practical travel suggestions and optimizing app performance. Additionally, we developed a deeper appreciation for iterative development and teamwork, understanding how collaboration and continuous refinement are crucial to delivering a polished, functional prototype.
What's next for TravelGenie – Your AI Travel Wish Fulfilled
In the future, we plan to enhance TravelGenie by incorporating more advanced AI capabilities to provide even smarter and more personalized travel recommendations. We aim to integrate additional APIs for local experiences, restaurants, and events, making the app a complete travel companion. Features like real-time itinerary updates, collaborative trip planning, and multilingual support are also on the roadmap. Additionally, we want to improve the visualization experience with 3D maps, AR previews, and immersive destination tours. Our goal is to make TravelGenie not just a planning tool, but a truly interactive and unforgettable travel assistant for every user.
