Inspiration

We were inspired by adventuring maps to create an interactive map, where a user can travel to different places in the world. Traveler's Quest at its core was a combination of similar long term ideas that were talked about, but never put into action. This was our chance to put our idea into a tangible product.

What it does

Once a user has traveled to a location, a certain "check" would trigger, and once the user has checked off similar locations (such as all dining commons), an achievement would take place.

How we built it

More importantly, we wanted to create a popup for each location, listing important statistics of said location. This meant that we had to implement a map API and learn the intricacies of Swift and it's respective functions. It was not easy to understand a new language, especially since all of us were new to Swift and had to learn together.

Challenges we ran into

Many people were contacted and although many claimed to be interested, more than half of them bailed before it even started. However, this meant that the remaining members were more strongly attached and we grew closer together with our ideas and knowledge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the harder challenges was getting Swift to work on our computers, because Swift is hard to use on Windows computers. A lot of learning occurred online, where we looked at Swift developers teachings and manipulated code to get what we wanted. This meant that once we got our code to work, it was very satisfying seeing the result.

What we learned

Learning Swift was the hardest challenge, because not only were we mostly new programmers spanning a diverse range of majors, none of us had a solid understanding of Swift. In addition, we had to navigate the world of coding, without much help, so we learned to be self reliant. Being able to share our ideas, good and bad, were crucial in the process.

What's next for Traveler's Quest

After this hackathon, we plan to develop the app more, specifically to add customization abilities. We have many more ideas in mind, but with limited time we were only able to do so much. In the perfect scenario, we would be able to publish an app where users can explore their surroundings and connect with each other virtually. We also envision an app where people can travel and use this app globally, and add creative collections to fill out, for example the Seven Wonders of the World. In all, we hope that Traveler's Quest can unite people in exploring the outdoors in an engaging manner.
