IProject overview
travel-video.info is a multilingual platform (French, English, Dutch) dedicated to cultural heritage. It combines documentary videos, in-depth articles, and photo galleries about architecture, history, and traditions from 19 countries and 22 Indian states.
The site currently hosts 243 videos per language and over 580 detailed entries (monuments, traditions, or natural sites), all based on real fieldwork and authentic personal travels. Each location is geolocated and connected to thematic, regional, and national maps, forming a scalable cartographic ecosystem. The platform is constantly evolving, with dozens of new videos in preparation.
What it does
From a single GPS coordinate per site, the project generates hierarchical and interactive maps powered by Google Maps Platform. These maps appear at different levels: • Video pages: show related monuments or practices • Country, state, and travel pages: show all related videos • Generic markers: open a window with a link to the video and a list of monuments (each linked to its dedicated page) • Specialized markers: distinguish monuments, traditions, or landscapes by icon • Exact positioning: allows full use of Street View where available
Everything is fully accessible in three languages, and optimized for both mobile and desktop browsing.
How we built it
• The project is created and maintained by a single person — including research, writing, photography, filming, editing, and development.
• A FileMaker database stores all structured data, calculates zoom levels, center coordinates, and marker types dynamically.
• The maps are integrated directly into a custom Joomla CMS using structured internal exports.
• The system is fully independent — no third-party map extensions are used.
• The design respects Google Maps Platform usage quotas through selective, optimized placement.
Challenges we ran into
• Creating a scalable map system that can handle hundreds of markers without clutter or loss of context
• Integrating geolocation and multilingual logic into a site with over 5000 pages, while minimizing API calls and maintaining clarity
• Ensuring precise placement of markers in remote or heavily built areas to enable meaningful use of Street View
• Structuring a responsive and accessible experience across all languages and devices without sacrificing performance
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Entirely built from scratch, by a single independent creator
• Consistent multilingual navigation, with trilingual maps, labels, and URLs
• A functional system of thematic and geographical cartography, built without plugins
• Over 240 cultural videos and 580 original heritage entries, all field-based
• Advanced marker system: generic + specialized icons, fully clickable and navigable
• Integration of Street View at monument scale, enhancing immersion and educational value
What we learned
That map-based navigation enhances user understanding of cultural and historical material
• That Google Maps Platform is flexible and powerful, even at individual scale
• That a structured data approach allows for dynamic generation of rich content with minimal overhead
• That high precision in marker placement creates new opportunities for immersive storytelling
What's next for travel-video.info – Mapping World Heritage
• Developing time-based navigation, linking maps to dynastic and historical timelines
• Expanding thematic collections (e.g., Buddhist caves, stepwells, colonial architecture)
• Adding support for map-based newsletter archives and curated exploration journeys
• Creating dynamic index pages by region or heritage type, with visual overlays
• Continuing personal field documentation in new locations, adding new languages over time
