Inspiration
Simple overseas scheduling are hard to come by, with sites like TripIt, Expedia etc. being bloated with ongoing deals and other offers. To make a simple scheduler during my travels I had used Google Sheets to plan it out, hence the idea of recreating a simple and robust scheduler which could be used to easily plan out trips and add details such as flights, hotels, sightseeing activities, meals and other miscellaneous tasks.
What it does
The simple overseas scheduler would be created using a web-based application, allowing users to easily and quickly add, edit and view their planned trip information. The application would have an intuitive design with a clean and minimalistic user interface.
The user would be able to easily create a trip and add details such as sightseeing locations, food, activities and miscellaneous tasks. The user would also be able to add more information about their trip such as budget, type of transportation. Finally the user can assemble their schedule with ease using the drag and drop function.
How we built it
The app is made using next js, tailwind css and prime react to utilize their premade utilities to build our app as quickl as possible without losing the aesthetics.
Challenges we ran into
We faced great challenges handling the complicated features such as drag and drop functionality. We had to weigh which features were crutial to the app, and plan according around building them in order to maximise our time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we managed to build a rudimentary proof of concept of what we envisioned that app to be. It has the basic functions like adding locations, drag and drop.
We are also proud that we managed to do this within the constraints of the limited time and resources that we had. We believe that we have laid the groundwork for a more robust and feature-rich version of the app that can be built in the future.
What we learned
We learnt more about next js and other frameworks whilst building the app, while also planning our time more effectively and to push through to finish up our tasks.
What's next for Travel Planner
There is much to do for our app. Now that we have a skeleton built, we can work on finishing up the drag and drop feature, integrating other APIs like google maps etc.. and to clean up the UI/UX design.
