Inspiration
Results from our survey showed us that people had frustrations and difficulties planning for travels and vacations.
What it does
Travel Planner allows users to choose travel and specific trip preferences and receive recommendations for itinerary items. Users can create trips, build itineraries, share trips with others, and explore restaurants and things to do in an area.
How we built it
We started with our survey to gain insights on user's travel habits and pain points. We also did secondary research and created a feature inventory comparing 6 existing apps/websites. We used insights from our survey and secondary research to create the proto-persona of Wanderlust Wally and our problem/solution statements. After deciding which features we wanted to prioritize, we created user flows for the main functions of our app. Then we went through multiple rounds of sketching and lo-fi wireframing to narrow down our ideas. From there we were able to move our lo-fi wireframes to mid and hi-fidelity. We made iterations as we worked on mid/hi fidelity and finalized our design decisions before creating our final prototype.
Challenges we ran into
For all three team members, this was our first project designing a mobile app and prototype on Figma. We had to adapt from designing websites and web apps for all of our previous projects. The gestures and interactions using a mobile app are different from a website, so initially it took us some time to adjust our design thinking. We worked simultaneously on creating wireframes, so it was challenging making sure we kept our designs consistent across pages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to go through most steps of the design process (minus usability testing) in a short period of time and produced our hi-fidelity prototype.
What we learned
Having clear communication is important in any project, regardless of time frame. Having everyone sketch their ideas and holding mini design studios was extremely helpful to visualize individual ideas and reach a consensus for design decisions.
What's next for Travel Planner
Usability testing because we did not have time during the Designathon time frame. Expanding on the collaborative/sharing features because survey participants said they expected group travel plans to be a whole group effort.
