Inspiration: We wanted to build an intuitive travel companion web app that makes trip planning and exploration easier for users. Our goal was to leverage the power of ReactJS along with integration of robust travel and maps APIs to deliver an enhanced user experience.

What it does: Travel Buddy allows users to instantly find restaurants, hotels, attractions near their current location or any desired spot on the map. Key features include displaying the user's location, filtering options, map view, rating-based filters, location search etc. This provides a one-stop solution to browse, shortlist and research places to visit during trips.

How we built it: We used ReactJS as the core framework to build the web app. For the map view and location search capabilities, we integrated the Google Maps JavaScript API. The Travel API provided the required data on nearby venues based on location coordinates. These APIs were seamlessly integrated into React components to deliver the required functionality.

Challenges we ran into: One major challenge was to get the user's current location from the browser and pass it to the Travel API to show nearby options instantly on app load. We had to ensure proper error handling in case location access was denied. The other challenge was around optimizing API requests to avoid hitting rate limits when filtering results. Caching and debouncing search requests helped overcome this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: We are proud of the smooth user experience we were able to build. The filtering, map view and location search features work nicely to provide a powerful yet easy to use travel planning experience.

What we learned: Through this project, we learned how to leverage the React framework to build a responsive client-side app. We gained experience in consuming map and location-based APIs within a React codebase.

What's next for Travel Buddy: Going forward, we plan to add more filter options, implement user authentication, improve styling and accessibility. Adding a trip planning section with date selection and itinerary building features is also on the roadmap.
