Inspiration

The idea for Travel AI - Trip Creator came from a personal experience. I was planning a trip to New Zealand and Australia with my girlfriend, who had enthusiastically pre-selected a wide range of points of interest. However, organizing these into an efficient itinerary proved challenging. After a quick search on the App Store yielded no suitable solutions, I realized there was an opportunity to create something truly useful for travelers like myself.

Travel AI - Trip Creator is designed to simplify trip planning. It allows users to input their selected points of interest and then generates optimal routes and travel plans. For those who like a particular plan, the app goes a step further by helping create detailed daily schedules. It's like having a smart travel assistant in your pocket, helping you make the most of your adventures.

How we built it

I developed Travel AI - Trip Creator using a modern tech stack:

SwiftUI for the user interface, which allowed me to create a responsive and intuitive design The Composable Architecture (TCA) for managing app state and logic SwiftData for local data persistence MapKit for integrating maps and location services ChatGPT API (in strict JSON mode) for generating intelligent trip suggestions

This combination of technologies enabled me to create a smooth, native iOS experience while leveraging AI for personalized trip planning.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge was optimizing the AI's trip planning capabilities. Initially, asking ChatGPT to plan entire trips at once often resulted in impractical itineraries. To overcome this, I implemented a multi-step approach, breaking down the planning process into smaller tasks. This significantly improved the quality and feasibility of the generated plans. Another significant hurdle was refining the prompts to ChatGPT. Crafting effective prompts that consistently produce high-quality, usable results required extensive experimentation. While I've made substantial progress, there's still room for improvement in this area.
