Inspiration

Waste mismanagement is a growing crisis in Nepal. In cities like Kathmandu, waste is dumped in unauthorized areas despite signs prohibiting it. Landfills like Sisdole are reaching capacity, and improper disposal is causing health and environmental hazards. While private companies handle waste collection, they lack data-driven solutions to optimize operations. This gap inspired us to create TrashTrack, a platform that leverages data to improve waste management efficiency.

What it does

TrashTrack is a smart waste management platform that:

  1. Collects & Analyzes Data – Tracks waste generation and pickup patterns.
  2. Optimizes Waste Collection – Uses data insights to improve efficiency.
  3. Bridges the Communication Gap – Connects households with waste management services.
  4. Empowers Decision-Making – Provides municipalities, NGOs, and businesses with actionable insights for better waste management.

How we built it

We started by analyzing the core issues and designing a solution around them. Our approach:

  1. Data Collection – We structured data on waste generation, pickup requests, and complaints.
  2. Tech Stack – We built a demo using Node.js for backend processing and plan to expand to a mobile app.
  3. Features – Truck tracking, pickup scheduling, real-time complaints, and data analytics for decision-making.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Problems fetching API: Pathfinding API
  2. Lack of historical data in the context of Nepal
  3. Market Research

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developing a Data-Driven Approach – We successfully structured waste management data to generate actionable insights.
  • Creating a Functional Prototype – Our demo showcases real-time tracking, pickup scheduling, and complaint management.
  • Identifying Key Stakeholders – We mapped out how municipalities, NGOs, and businesses can benefit from our platform.
  • Building a Scalable Vision – TrashTrack isn’t just a one-time solution; it’s designed for future expansion and integration.

What we learned

Through our research and development, we learned:

  • The Importance of Data – Data-driven decisions can significantly improve waste collection efficiency.
  • Challenges in Waste Management – Delayed pickups, overflowing bins, and lack of recycling awareness are common issues.
  • Technology’s Role – Existing tech like GPS tracking can be leveraged to create smarter waste management solutions.

What's next for TrashTrack

  • Mobile App Development – Expanding from a web-based platform to a user-friendly mobile application.
  • Integration with Waste Collection Companies – Partnering with existing waste management services for real-world implementation.
  • Advanced Data Analytics – Enhancing our insights with AI to predict waste trends and optimize collection routes.
  • Expanding to More Communities – Scaling our solution beyond Kathmandu to other cities in Nepal.
