Inspiration
We were looking for a project that would build off the skills we worked on in class while also challenging ourselves to work on something new.
What it does
This app accepts an image and determines whether it is recyclable or not.
How we built it
We built a simple Node/Express server that integrates Gemini-2.5-Flash for analysis.
Challenges we ran into
We originally intended to write an iOS application with the same functionality but due to deprecated services and time constraints, we decided to use a desktop-oriented framework instead. We also had trouble setting up our API key since we had never used Google AI before.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to complete an albeit simple application that does the intended goal. Although it was not the true mobile app we had intended to develop it is a well-integrated and user-friendly application nevertheless.
What we learned
We discovered the challenges of development using Swift for Google AI integration. We instead learned the seamlessness of its usage in Node/Express settings. We also refined our usage of version control using Git/GitHub, since it has been a while since we used it.
What's next for TrashTalk
We hope to recreate this application for a mobile setting eventually. There are many alternatives that we could have attempted, such as implementing Firebase as our server, but due to time constraints. We hope that we can complete this after this competition.
