Inspiration
We noticed that our homes are full of old phones, broken electronic toys, and tangled cables. Kids often don't realize that e-waste is dangerous to the environment, yet it also contains valuable raw materials. We decided to design a tool that combines environmental education with basic entrepreneurship, proving to the youngest generation that recycling simply pays off.
What it does
Trash2Cash is designed to be an interactive app that playfully teaches children how to properly sort e-waste. In our vision, users will be able to virtually examine broken devices, learn how to safely dispose of them, and discover which ones can be refurbished and sold for profit. The app aims to turn a boring chore into an exciting planet-saving mission.
How we built it
Since this is currently at the prototype stage, we started by brainstorming and designing kid-friendly UI mockups in Figma. Our development plan involves building an interactive frontend that feels like a simple game, which we plan to connect to a lightweight backend containing a knowledge base about e-waste hazards and recovery values.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge during the ideation phase has been figuring out how to translate complex e-waste recycling rules into simple, engaging, and kid-friendly messages. We also realize we need to carefully balance the "earning" aspect in our game mechanics so that the main takeaway remains environmental protection, not just profit.
What we learned
Through researching this concept, we learned that gamification is a powerful tool in environmental education. We dove deep into the topic of e-waste ourselves and realized how crucial early education is to realistically help reduce the amount of technological waste ending up in landfills.
