Trash2Cash: Transforming Waste into Digital Value

Inspiration

Our inspiration for Trash2Cash came from observing two parallel trends: the growing environmental crisis caused by improper waste management, and the rising interest in digital assets and blockchain technology. We asked ourselves: what if we could harness the excitement around digital ownership to solve real-world environmental challenges?

The disconnect between sustainable actions and tangible rewards has always been a barrier to widespread recycling adoption. By bridging this gap, we believed we could transform recycling from a mere responsibility into an opportunity for value creation. The concept of "trash to treasure" isn't new, but applying modern technology to create immediate, transparent incentives for recycling represents an innovative approach to an age-old problem.

What it does

Trash2Cash is a platform that rewards users for recycling by converting their sustainable actions into digital assets. Here's how it works:

  • Scan & Identify: Users take photos of recyclable items using our app
  • AI Analysis: Our system identifies and categorizes the waste materials
  • Token Rewards: Users earn T2C tokens based on their recycling contributions
  • Digital Assets: Tokens can be claimed to crypto wallets or used to mint exclusive NFTs
  • Achievement System: Users unlock special NFTs by reaching recycling milestones The current implementation is a proof-of-concept that demonstrates this flow, with plans to integrate physical drop-off points in the future where users can deposit recyclables for verification, creating a hybrid online-offline ecosystem.

How we built it

We built Trash2Cash using a modern tech stack focused on user experience and scalability:

  • Frontend: Next.js and React for a responsive, fast user interface
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS for consistent, beautiful design
  • Authentication: NextAuth with Google OAuth for secure, easy login
  • Simulated AI: Created a demonstration of how AI would identify recyclable items
  • Token System: Implemented a simulated token economy with claiming functionality NFT Achievements: Designed a system of collectible NFTs tied to recycling milestones The application features a comprehensive dashboard that tracks user statistics, token balances, and recycling history. We implemented a mobile-responsive design to ensure accessibility across all devices.

Challenges we ran into

Building Trash2Cash presented several significant challenges:

  • Balancing Simulation and Reality: Creating a convincing demonstration of AI capabilities while being transparent about the current limitations
  • User Experience Design: Crafting an intuitive interface that makes a complex concept accessible to users unfamiliar with blockchain technology
  • Token Economy Design: Developing a sustainable token system that provides meaningful incentives without being susceptible to exploitation
  • Future Integration Planning: Designing the digital system with future physical integration in mind Educational Component: Finding ways to educate users about both recycling best practices and digital asset management
