Inspiration
We realize that pollution and having excessive garbage in our community is a big problem. A couple years ago, we were involved in a coding club and another group of girls decided to come up with an app that helped tackle this problem. Unfortunately, they abandoned their app after a year and did not return to it. So, we thought it would be a good idea to start a new app that addressed the same problem.
What it does
The app tells users whether or not their trash should be composted, recycled, or put in landfill. Users can get information on what types of materials are compostable, recyclable, or put in landfill by searching their trash in the search bar.
How I built it
We used MIT App Inventor 2 to create our app.
Challenges I ran into
Unfortunately, we were not able to get the search bar to work on time. However, users can still get information on how to sort their trash. We also set up the format for our game, but did not have enough time to program it. The idea of the game was for users to drag whatever icon of trash popped up into the correct garbage bin.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud that we were able to accomplish this in only one day, especially because we did not have very much experience with coding. We also went through many challenges throughout our journey, but figured out a way to overcome them all, which we are very proud of.
What I learned
We learned how to work quickly as a team and overcome challenges we faced.
What's next for Trash Sorting App
Our next task is to finish coding and complete our game. WE would also like to program our search bar so that users are able to search which bin their trash should go into.
