Inspiration

WikiNews.org is a great resource, but because it is written by volunteers it doesn't get updated regularly.

What it does

This skill reads a brief summary of the most recent English news story published on WikiNews.org. If you have a device with a screen you will also get to see a photo from the story and the published date.

How I built it

I worked at night after watching several APL tutorials and looking at the Pager Karaoke sample.

Challenges I ran into

As with much new software, examples could be flushed out a bit more. I spent two nights banging my head against the wall because the example I was working from didn't work on devices without a screen.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I submitted a pull request to improve the example projects I used - hopefully helping others avoid some of the pitfalls I hit during development.

What I learned

I learned visual design is hard. I went through several iterations of design before deciding existing APL templates worked best for this project.

What's next for Wiki News

I'd like to update the visual design and refactor the code before I open source the project.
