Inspiration
Our inspiration from this came from wanting to improve our recycling at home. Most people, including us, put things in the recycling container and forget about what is inside, so the goal is to have more awareness in it.
What it does
The product detects the current in either a plastic bottle or a metal can and sorts it based on the reading it gets, putting all plastics together and all metal together.
How we built it
We laser cut the all parts except for the hinges which we 3D printed. We spit our team into two groups, one group focused on the coding, and the other the building aspects of it.
Challenges we ran into
Laser cutting was not available for the majority of Saturday. 3D printed parts getting lost and needing reprinting. Trying out different ideas that did not work and trying to figure out the best solution. Telling other group members our ideas so they could picture them visually.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting the current detector to distinguish plastic and metal.
What we learned
We learned that planning is key to making a good design, and don't be fixed on the first idea that comes to mind because sometimes you have to make due with what you have.
What's next for Trash Cash
Add more features such as a draining feature, a voice that tells you ways you can recycle, as well as improving the design visually.
