Inspiration
Traveling should be about discovery, not disappointment. But too often, travelers fall into tourist traps — overpriced services, fake experiences, and hidden scams. We wanted to build something that empowers the global travel community to share real experiences and help each other avoid these pitfalls. The idea for TrapAlert came from countless stories of friends and fellow travelers frustrated by being scammed, pressured, or disappointed by so-called “must-see” attractions.
What it does
TrapAlert is a modern, mobile-first website that lets travelers search cities, landmarks, and attractions to uncover potential tourist traps. Using an interactive risk map with color-coded markers, users can quickly see high-risk spots flagged by the community, read verified reports and reviews, learn about common scams, and share their own experiences. TrapAlert uses a smart algorithm to highlight locations with repeated scam reports, helping travelers avoid trouble and discover authentic, locally recommended places instead.
How we built it
We designed TrapAlert using Bolt.new’s platform, focusing on an intuitive, clean interface with warm tones and clear icons to convey trust and caution effectively. We implemented a searchable database of locations and reports, built the interactive map using dynamic, color-coded markers, and integrated a comment and tagging system so travelers can share warnings, recommendations, and tips. Our smart detection system prioritizes frequently reported issues and flags high-risk spots accordingly.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was balancing alert information with positive recommendations so the site wouldn’t feel negative or fear-driven. We wanted TrapAlert to also highlight hidden gems and authentic experiences — not just warn about scams.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making travel safer and more rewarding through real community insights.
What we learned
We learned the importance of clear, honest design to build trust, especially when dealing with potentially negative information. We also discovered how powerful community-driven data can be when combined with a smart algorithm to surface the most important warnings. Above all, we learned travelers are eager to help each other when given the right platform.
What's next for TrapAlert
We plan to expand our coverage to even more cities, build a mobile app for offline access, add AI-driven scam detection using real-time data, and launch traveler rewards for contributing verified reports. Ultimately, we want TrapAlert to be the go-to travel safety tool for every traveler — helping people around the world travel smart, avoid traps, and enjoy authentic experiences.
