Inspiration
While doomscrolling TikTok, I realized that Gen Z actually has a whole new language that not most people can understand, especially the older generations which might stumble upon the said language. This realization endorsed me the idea of a translator but for the Gen Z language, then the seedling of tranZlator was planted.
What it does
tranZlator allows one to understand this Gen Z language by simply pasting the text. It has two modes of translation, plain and formal. Plain translation allows you to understand what it means on a normal day to day conversation, simple and straightforward. Formal translation was made purely out of fun but it can be useful when you want to use a Gen Z language in a formal setting (e.g. citing a TikTok comment).
How we built it
The idea of tranZlator is that, it is made for people that is not chronically online and for people that is not currentlly familiar with the internet, as such, the UI and UX needs to be simple and concise, only doing what it is the best at. No auth, database, login/sign-up needed in order to use it.
Challenges we ran into
The first problem was me not having any idea how to start this project, followed by the fact that I have zero creativity in terms of designing websites. While I didn't overcome the lack of artistic talent, I did what I could in order the skills needed to do the idea of tranZlator.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was pretty proud when I could control how the div would look like (w3schools ftw)
When the function using regex worked in order to translate the slangs to normal english.
Just the fact that I finished this project makes me proud and it is an accomplishment.
What we learned
I definitely learned a lot, considering I've always avoided web development because of my lack of artistic talent. I learned what's the difference between a padding and a margin, how to use div for everything, and just overall see the flow of web development. This has been a great learning experience, I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone which is inclined to STEM, web dev is actually pretty fun when everything looks like how you want it to be.
