Inspiration
Transylvania Gazette began as a simple weather bot on Telegram.
The initial idea was straightforward: could a fictional newspaper report the weather and events of a fictional Transylvanian city as if it were a real publication?
That experiment gradually became something much larger.
Instead of generating isolated articles, I started building the world behind the newspaper: its history, geography, citizens, institutions, relationships, places, artists, writers, composers and events.
The Transylvania Gazette Universum (TGU) emerged from this process as the persistent fictional world behind the Gazette.
The central idea is simple:
The Gazette started as a newspaper. It is becoming a world.
What it does
Transylvania Gazette is a living fictional newspaper documenting an evolving world.
The system maintains a persistent world state and uses it to produce interconnected newspaper content rather than treating every article as an isolated generation.
The world currently includes:
- historical and regional events
- living weather
- citizens and institutions
- places and cartography
- fictional artists, writers and critics
- paintings, literature and music created within the world
- connections between people and their works
- autonomous newspaper publishing
The Gazette is one of several ways in which the world can be experienced.
How I built it
The project is built as a collection of interconnected systems rather than a single application.
A persistent world state acts as the source of truth. Editorial rules determine what kinds of stories are published, while the current state of the world provides the context for those stories.
Weather is treated as a global causal factor rather than a decorative daily entry. Events can create consequences that appear in later editions, while people, institutions and places persist across publications.
The publishing layer connects the generated Gazette with external platforms, allowing the newspaper to publish automatically rather than requiring every article to be manually posted.
The project also includes an evolving visual and cultural layer, including editorial illustrations, fictional artworks and music created by artists who exist inside the world.
Challenges I ran into
The main challenge was keeping a growing fictional world coherent.
Another challenge was building the system as a solo developer while continuously expanding its scope from a simple Telegram bot into a multi-layer world simulation and publishing system.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The biggest accomplishment is that the original experiment evolved far beyond its initial purpose.
What started as a weather bot became a functioning fictional publication with its own persistent world, geography, population, institutions, culture and history.
The project now produces and publishes material autonomously and has developed its own internal artistic culture, including fictional painters, writers and composers whose works can reference and influence one another.
What I learned
How to use LLMs to build autonomous services and agents for creating an immersive universum.
What's next for Transylvania Gazette
The next step is to move beyond the newspaper as the primary interface.
I am developing an immersive presentation layer for the world, with AR, XR and VR as possible ways of experiencing its places and environments.
The goal is to take places that currently exist as descriptions, maps and records and give them spatial presence.
The Gazette will remain the publication documenting the world, but the world itself will no longer have to exist only on paper.
The Gazette started as a newspaper. It is becoming a world.
