Inspiration
Moving to a new city can be exciting but overwhelming. Generic recommendations often fail to match individual interests and tastes. We built Transplant – Move Cities. Keep Your Taste. to help people discover places and experiences that match their personalities, making relocation easier and more enjoyable.
What It Does
Transplant creates a personalized First 30 Days plan based on the user's current city, destination, and 3–10 favorite things. It recommends relevant restaurants, venues, entertainment, and experiences using Qloo's taste intelligence API.
How We Built It
We integrated Qloo's API to resolve user interests into entities and generate taste-based recommendations. A Groq-powered AI agent uses tools to search entities, identify relevant tags, and retrieve recommendations. A server-side validator ensures that recommended places are grounded in actual Qloo results. We also added caching, rate limiting, a recommendation trace panel, and a Compare mode to demonstrate the difference between personalized recommendations and generic AI suggestions.
Challenges We Faced
One major challenge was ensuring recommendations were relevant to users' individual tastes rather than generic suggestions. We addressed this by grounding recommendations in Qloo's data and validating entity IDs on the server. Handling empty results, ambiguous entity names, API rate limits, and different response formats also required careful testing.
What We Learned
We learned how to integrate external APIs with AI agents, build tool-calling workflows, validate AI-generated outputs, and handle API failures. We also explored how taste intelligence can make AI recommendations more personalized, transparent, and useful.
What's Next
We aim to improve location-aware recommendations, expand supported categories, and enhance the first-30-days experience with more adaptive plans and real-time information.
