Inspiration
As a self-published author myself, I grew frustrated with juggling 5+ disjointed tools to write, format, design, and market my books. The gap between a rough manuscript and a polished, publishable book felt unmanageable—so I set out to build a unified platform that streamlines every step of the self-publishing journey for authors like me.
What it does
BookAuthor Toolkit is a one-stop SaaS platform for self-publishing authors, combining AI-assisted writing, professional book formatting, AI-driven cover design, publishing support for KDP/IngramSpark, and post-launch marketing tools—all in a visually intuitive, animated interface that makes the entire process seamless.
How we built it
We started with user-centric design in Figma, mapping every core self-publishing workflow (writing → formatting → design → publishing → marketing). We built the frontend with React and Tailwind CSS, leveraging Framer Motion and GSAP for fluid animations, Three.js for 3D interactive elements, and optimized for 60fps performance across devices. The card-based dashboard and seamless module navigation were crafted to mirror real author workflows.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing high-fidelity animations (3D flips, parallax, particle effects) with smooth performance on low-end devices. We also had to align the platform’s features to match industry-standard self-publishing terminology and workflows for KDP/IngramSpark, ensuring accuracy and usability for seasoned authors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a visually stunning, yet functional interface that doesn’t sacrifice performance—every animation (typewriter effects, 3D cover previews, carousel transitions) serves a purpose, guiding authors through the process rather than overwhelming them. We also condensed 5+ separate tools into a single, intuitive dashboard that feels natural to use.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of self-publishing authors’ pain points—simplicity and cohesion matter more than flashy features. We also mastered optimizing hardware-accelerated animations for cross-device performance, and learned to align product design with real-world industry workflows (e.g., KDP metadata requirements).
What's next for this project
We plan to add advanced AI content editing tools tailored to genre-specific writing styles (fiction, business, memoir), integrate direct previews for e-book/print formats, and build out a community hub where authors can share templates and marketing strategies. We’re also exploring mobile optimization for on-the-go writing and editing.
