Inspiration

As community college transfer students, we know firsthand how confusing the transfer process can be. Students have to navigate multiple websites, understand course requirements, meet deadlines, and make important academic decisions. Tools like ASSIST and UC TAP provide useful information, but students are still responsible for putting everything together.

We wanted to change that.

TransferTrack was created to give community college students a more personalized and organized way to plan their future. Our goal is to make transferring less stressful and help students take control of their academic journey.

What It Does

TransferTrack is an AI-powered transfer planning platform that connects academic information, course planning, and student progress in one place.

Using Superhuman Go, students can interact with an AI transfer advisor that helps them understand their academic plan and make informed decisions.

Our working prototype allows students to:

  • View their academic profile and transfer destination.
  • Track planned courses and academic terms.
  • See their progress toward modeled transferable-unit requirements.
  • Identify requirements that still need verification.
  • Review academic risks and recommendations.
  • Use an AI agent to propose changes to their course plan.
  • Approve changes and see their dashboard update automatically.

Rather than simply answering questions, TransferTrack connects AI-powered recommendations to a student's saved academic plan.

How We Built It

We built TransferTrack using Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Upstash Redis, and Vercel, with Superhuman Go powering the AI agent experience.

We divided the project into four main components:

Backend: We developed APIs to retrieve student profiles, evaluate course plans, and save approved changes using Upstash Redis.

Academic Evaluation: We implemented a rules-based evaluator that analyzes courses against our modeled transfer requirements and distinguishes verified information from requirements needing further review.

Student Dashboard: We designed a responsive dashboard displaying academic plans, planned courses, transferable units, and evaluation results. The dashboard checks for updates every two seconds.

AI Agent Integration: We built a custom connector using the Coda Packs SDK, allowing Superhuman Go to retrieve student information, evaluate proposed course plans, and save approved changes.

In our live demonstration, Superhuman Go successfully added a planned course to a student's academic record. The updated plan was saved in Redis and displayed in the dashboard.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was connecting multiple technologies into one working system during a short hackathon.

We had to make sure the AI agent could retrieve accurate student information, evaluate proposed changes, request approval, and save those changes without overwriting existing data.

Another challenge was academic data accuracy. Transfer requirements vary across institutions and majors, so we made sure our prototype clearly distinguishes verified requirements from information that still needs review.

We also worked on creating a dashboard that felt welcoming and easy to use rather than overwhelming students with complicated academic information.

What We Learned

This project taught us that building an AI agent is about more than generating answers.

We learned how to connect AI agents with external tools, build APIs, manage persistent data, and create a frontend that responds to changes made by an agent.

Most importantly, we learned how important it is to design AI systems that students can trust, especially when those systems are helping them make academic decisions.

What's Next

Our long-term vision is to expand TransferTrack to support California community colleges and UC campuses with broader verified course articulation data.

We also want to introduce personalized application tracking, financial aid guidance, scholarship opportunities, reminders, and student-to-student advice.

Eventually, we hope TransferTrack becomes a complete transfer companion that supports students from their first community college semester through their transition to university.

Our mission is simple: Students shouldn't have to become experts in the transfer process just to transfer.
