Inspiration
Transferring from community college to 4-year university is usually a rough process regarding a bridge in coursework between what is taught in lower and upper-division courses, handling a fast-paced quarter/semester system, club and financial aid resources, etc. Personally, as a transfer who struggled roughly with the process, this inspired me to develop this project to help the community.
What it does
This project highlights relevant coursework required by transfer students to take during their first quarter, or topics to prepare for upper-division courses, chat with other students or mentors live, connect with clubs and financial resources.
How we built it
Frontend: HTML, CSS Backend: NodeJS, ExpressJS Database: MongoDB API: Twilio API
The chat system uses the Twilio API, so when a user sends a chat to another user, then there is a message sent to the receiver's phone. I used the Twilio API for an effective communication system.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the MongoDB database to run fully. Data is being stored in the MongoDB database but there is an issue with the async-await handling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of developing software that helps transfer students like me to have a smooth transfer to a 4-year university like UC Davis. I'm glad I'm able to contribute to the community and help connect transfer students with valuable resources.
What we learned
I learned full-stack development with MongoDB, NodeJS, Express, HTML, and CSS as well as API integration for a community-driven application. I gained knowledge in debugging and using the command line as well as getting help from resources like StackOverflow.
