Inspiration
We were inspired by our own experiences as community college students aiming to transfer to a 4-year university. We overall found the transfer process to be confusing, stressful and time-consuming. One large reason for this is the confusing course agreements between each community college and the course requirements required by the different universities. This results in not taking the correct courses for transfer, leading to wasted money, time and effort.
What it does
In short, this website equips you with the knowledge and tools to navigate your transfer journey with confidence. It can potentially save you time, money, and a whole lot of stress, allowing you to focus on what matters most: achieving your academic goals. Transfer Buddy is a tool that matches your courses you've taken in community college and clearly shows the courses you still need to transfer for each university. Having a clear list of courses allows hopeful transfer students to create a better plan for their transfer journey.
How we built it
This is a website built with HTML, CS, JavaScript and Json.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we have faced in our project is the lack of datasets and api related to transfer coursework and transfer agreements across colleges. This currently limits the scalability of our project and the audience it can reach.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have a functional demo, working as a team, assembling a working project using different skills from 3 unique individuals.
What we learned
The statistics behind community college students transferring to four-year universities. “According to the Public Policy Institute of California, more than 3 out of every 4 students entering the community college system declare transfer as their goal, but only 4% of those students do so in two years. Only 19% of students transfer in four years, and 28% do so within six.”
What's next for Transfer Buddy
Our dream for transfer buddy will be to have it be compatible with all community colleges and universities. We would also love to add a schedule builder and admissions rate based on major. If we had more time, we would have added a back end/server to allow for account creation. Looking to the future, the presentation mentions potential website advancements like AI-powered course matching and scholarship matching engines. It also highlights plans to build a supportive community for transfer students and expand partnerships with universities and national transfer organizations. By displaying its commitment to continuous improvement, TransferBuddy.com positions itself as a valuable resource for a smooth and successful transfer experience. As well as aspiring future Website Features: AI-powered course matching for accurate transfer credit evaluation. Scholarship matching engine to identify relevant financial aid opportunities. Building a Supportive Community: Online forums and discussion boards for transfer student connection. Alumni success stories displaying successful transfer journeys. Virtual workshops and events with advisors and university representatives. Expanding Partnerships: Collaboration with national transfer organizations for wider reach. University-specific transfer guides for tailored application procedures. Employer connections to highlight the value of transfer students. Bonus: Partnerships and Future Plans. Using an enhanced form of coding we plan to continuously strive to improve the overall quality of transferbuddy.com. The goal would be to actively working with community colleges and educational organizations to make transferbuddy.com a valuable resource for all transfer students.
