Inspiration
As a team that is mainly made up of City College students planning to transfer to 4-year universities, we understand how difficult it is to create an effective plan for completing our necessary coursework. While counselors do help, limited availability and time turn the process of creating a schedule into a tedious and stressful endeavor. That's why we chose to design Transfer Assist: a tool that does all of that for us.
What it does
Transfer Assist is an online counselor for California college transfer students. We leverage Assist.org to generate efficient, practical, and ambitious schedule plans based on the needs of students.
How we built it
First, we came up with our idea and began brainstorming how it would look. Eventually, we decided on a website which leverages AI to generate schedules for students. However, because Assist.org does not have a public API, we also had to find ways to collect the data from Assist.org on our own. Through countless trial and error, we were able to bring our learning together and create our final product: Transfer Assist
Challenges we ran into
The two major challenges we ran into when creating our project were learning how to connect to our project to Claude API, and learning JavaScript on the fly in order to implement everything into our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating something that is truly helpful and needed is always something to be proud of. However, the fact that our project was created in under 36 hours, despite our team mostly being first-time hackers, is a major accomplishment for us and a huge motivator for the future.
What we learned
This year’s hackathon was an incredible learning experience and all of us on the team were able to learn new things not only from the sponsors, but from each other. Over the course of this event, many of us worked in areas we’ve never worked in before and in languages we’ve never coded in.
What's next for Transfer Assist
Our team thinks that this is only the beginning for Transfer Assist. Both big and small, we’ve had many ideas for additions to the project that have yet to be explored. For example, how can we count credits for students across semester, trimester, and quarter systems?
