Inspiration
Online transactions have made life easier, but they have also made financial fraud harder to notice. We wanted to explore how data science and machine learning could help identify suspicious transactions before they become a bigger problem.
The idea behind TransactIQ came from a simple question: instead of only telling someone that a transaction looks suspicious, can we also explain why it looks suspicious and what action should be taken?
What it does
TransactIQ is an AI-powered fraud detection and risk analysis platform.
It analyzes transaction data and assigns a fraud probability to each transaction. Along with the prediction, it highlights the factors that contributed to the decision, such as unusual transaction amounts, unfamiliar locations, unusual transaction times, or abnormal spending patterns.
The platform also provides an interactive dashboard where users can explore transaction trends, fraud patterns, risk levels, and model insights.
How we built it
We started by cleaning and exploring transaction data to understand the patterns behind legitimate and fraudulent transactions.
We performed feature engineering and handled the imbalance between fraudulent and legitimate transactions. We experimented with multiple machine learning approaches, including Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost, and compared them using metrics such as Precision, Recall, F1-score, and ROC-AUC.
For explainability, we used feature-level insights so that the model's prediction is not simply a black box.
The final model is connected to a web-based dashboard where a user can enter or analyze transaction information and immediately see the risk level and important contributing factors.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was dealing with imbalanced data because fraudulent transactions are usually much fewer than legitimate transactions.
Another challenge was finding the right balance between model performance and interpretability. A model that gives a prediction is useful, but a model that can explain that prediction is much more valuable in a real-world scenario.
We also had to make the results understandable to someone who may not have a machine learning background.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that TransactIQ goes beyond simply predicting fraud.
It combines machine learning, data visualization, and explainable insights into one platform. Instead of showing only a percentage, it helps users understand the reasoning behind a high-risk prediction.
We also built the project with the idea that it could eventually be integrated into real-time transaction monitoring systems.
What we learned
This project taught us that building a good machine learning solution is not just about achieving the highest accuracy.
Data preprocessing, feature engineering, handling class imbalance, choosing the right evaluation metrics, and explaining model predictions are equally important.
We also learned how to turn a machine learning model into something that a real user can actually interact with.
What's next for TransactIQ
Our next goal is to make TransactIQ capable of real-time fraud detection.
We want to add continuous transaction monitoring, user-specific spending profiles, real-time alerts, stronger anomaly detection, and a more advanced investigation interface.
We also see potential for deploying the system on cloud infrastructure so it can process larger volumes of transactions while maintaining low response times.
Ultimately, we want TransactIQ to move from simply detecting suspicious transactions to helping organizations make faster and smarter risk decisions.
