Inspiration

We have all had the experience of sleeping in a bright or noisy room, finding ourselves feeling unrested even after a long nap. Even when we sleep in the comfort of our homes, we often neglect to recognize our environment. We often overlook simple things, like the cars that drive by your house at night and the light that shines into your room. Though these may seem insignificant, it can have an enormous impact on your sleep quality over time. That is why we created Tranquilcheck

What it does

Tranquilcheck is a mobile app that empowers users to conveniently assess the quality of their environment for activities such as sleeping and eventually, studying.

How we built it

We first developed the app using Flutter and Dart on IntelliJ. To use the light meter and noise meter on the phone, we installed their respective Flutter Packages from Dart Pub. After successfully setting that up, we then figured out how to take those measurements from one screen to the next.

Challenges we ran into

We faced lots of challenges throughout this hackathon. We first encountered a challenge at the very beginning while we were having difficulties connecting to the internet. Then we had problems with Flutter. The first couple of hours at HackTJ were a grim trek through barren documentation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We finished the app, for starters. On top of that, it was the first time we worked in larger teams and all contributed a good amount to the app. It was also the first complete app we created with Dart, Flutter, and those plugins, so in a way, it was entirely on-site.

What we learned

We learned some of the "best practices" for creating flutter apps. We also learned perseverance and teamwork, as well as how to pull an all nighter and keep on trucking.

What's next for Tranquilcheck

We intend to improve the UI, add more features, write a backend to track your environments, and use more sensors in more creative ways to improve the detection of your environment.
