Inspiration
Inspired by the London Tube Challenge, we thought Helsinki needed a fun public transport challenge.
What it does
Visit all the tram stops in Helsinki as fast as possible. It's going to take you a few hours, and be prepared for some running between lines!
The website explains the rules, has a map of trams and keeps a leaderboard.
The iOS app allows you to track your progress, and to see the movement of trams, and on completion of all the stops your result will be posted to the leaderboard.
How we built it
Built using the digitransit apis and using iOS and web development technologies.
The website is build using Ruby on Rails v5.
Challenges we ran into and wccomplishments that we are proud of
Coding a complete iOS app in a weekend is a significant challenge. We are proud we have something usable!
We are pretty pleased with the data available to us, but we would like to be able to verify our competitors trips reliably using some mechanism. Cleaner tram location data would help us with this.
Special routes due to roadworks, time of year and route changes are a challenge for us.
What's next for TramChallenge
We hope to get the app visible in the app store as soon as possible but it needs to go through apple's approval process. We will seek publicity once the app is launched.
In the future it would be possible to expand this to other cities with good data for their tram system. For instance, Prague has a suitable sized tram network.
