Andrew comes from a family that loves hiking and his a long distance runner himself. Many instances when on the trails, he saw dangers such as rattlesnakes to wildcats, fallen bridges to tree falls. He, along with the rest of the team, wanted to create an application where runners, hikers, and users alike can alert each other about trail conditions and hazards to enhance of safety of those on it.
What it does
The app utilizes a google maps API to allow users to pinpoint the exact location of a danger they see with a marker and label. Fellow hikers can then use the app to avoid the pinpointed dangers as they go on their journey.
How we built it
We utilized Android Studio and Google Maps API to construct an android application.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was the fact that the team was comprised of coders with not much experience with APIs or Android studio. As a result, we struggled to set up the Google Maps API to function with Android Studio.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we now have a better understanding for the design process of an app using android studio as well as getting better understanding of APIs.
What we learned
We learned how we must think quickly when faced with a challenging problem that may take too long to surpass. Although our app did not necessarily turn out the way we had originally planned, we still learned how to implement a google maps API and learn the basics of android studio for the first time.
What's next for TrailTrak
We plan to have real time location updates, an option to delete marker you have saved, as well as be able to save maps with markers you have created. We also plan to make it so that all people nearby have access to the same map and have it consistently updated with new pinpointed hazards.
