Inspiration

The ability of Google Maps 3D to zoom into landmarks inspired me to create an immersive experience that allows users to explore the incredible historic trails across the United States. By combining cutting-edge technology with rich, interactive content, my goal is to bring these trails to life, offering a virtual journey through the nation's most iconic and storied routes.

What it does

TrailEagle offers users the ability to virtually explore historic landmarks along the nation’s iconic trails. This immersive technology can also be leveraged by travel agencies, allowing them to showcase these virtual historic routes on large screen TVs, offering customers a captivating preview of the journeys they can embark on. Whether in a showroom or during presentations, TrailEagle enhances the travel experience, bringing history to life in stunning detail.

How we built it

I used ReactJS, HTML, CSS and The Google Maps JavaScript API to build the website

Challenges we ran into

From a technical perspective, the implementation of the Maps API was straightforward and posed few challenges. However, I did encounter some physical difficulties related to motion sickness caused by the 3D map camera movement, particularly when working on a small laptop screen. I experience similar issues with 3D games, so this is more of a personal challenge rather than a technological one. The real difficulty for me was managing the discomfort—taking frequent, extended breaks allowed me to continue development, though it certainly slowed the process at times.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Made the Javascript Maps API work with the ReactJS app

What's next for TrailEagle

Currently, TrailEagle has only a few select trails, but my vision is to add more trails from cities across the US and hopefully around the world. By incorporating these iconic routes, TrailEagle will provide users with an immersive, global experience.

If there is enough interest, I may explore opportunities to collaborate with agencies, tourism boards, and cultural institutions to create these interactive maps experiences on large screens in offices, visitor centers, and public spaces. This would give clients and visitors a unique, engaging way to explore global landmarks and destinations, bringing history and culture to life in a dynamic new way.
