Inspiration

Trail of Tears – A Poetic AI Short Documentary* was inspired by one of the darkest chapters in American history — the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation and other Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands in the 1830s.

I wanted to reimagine this tragedy not through statistics or narration, but through emotion and poetry — allowing viewers to feel the silence, sorrow, and dignity of a people walking into exile.

What it does

This short film blends documentary storytelling with poetic visuals to evoke empathy and remembrance.
Using AI-generated imagery, the film reconstructs historical scenes — families walking through snow, fading campfires, and the unspoken grief of displacement — transforming them into a visual poem that bridges fact and feeling.

It’s not about re-creating history literally, but emotionally — about letting the audience sense the weight of silence, the ache of memory.

How we built it

Visuals were crafted using Hailuo AI, through layered prompt engineering to achieve historical atmosphere and emotional realism.

  • ChatGPT was used for poetic scripting, scene pacing, and thematic refinement.
  • The film was edited and color-graded in CapCut, ensuring a consistent, somber tone throughout.
  • Still frames and cover art were designed using Microsoft Designer.
  • The project was published through the Doors and Roads channel on YouTube.

Every shot was composed with care — as if painting fragments of collective memory.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was to balance authenticity with artistic abstraction.
Depicting a real tragedy through AI tools demanded sensitivity and restraint.
It was crucial that the imagery felt respectful — evoking grief, not exploiting it.

Another challenge was maintaining visual cohesion across different AI outputs.
It required careful adjustments in color, texture, and composition to keep the film consistent and emotionally believable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a poetic documentary that honors history through empathy, not spectacle.
  • Used AI tools to humanize historical memory, rather than to distort it.
  • Crafted an emotional experience that has resonated deeply with viewers and educators.
  • Built a visual narrative that bridges technology and humanity, showing how AI can serve remembrance.

What we learned

  • That poetry and history can coexist — truth can be felt as well as known.
  • That AI filmmaking requires not only technical skill but also ethical sensitivity.
  • That emotion, light, and silence can sometimes say more than words.
  • That reimagining the past is a way to keep memory alive, especially in a time when stories risk being forgotten.

What's next for Trail of Tears – A Poetic AI Short Documentary

I plan to expand this project into a series exploring forgotten histories and lost voices — blending poetry, AI visuals, and cinematic narration.
The goal is to create a collection of poetic documentaries under the Doors and Roads series, each one illuminating a different chapter of human experience.

Trail of Tears is only the beginning — a quiet voice among many, reminding us that history lives within every step we take.
