Inspiration
In our day-to-day lives, traffic congestion has become one of the biggest urban challenges. As a citizen and student, I’ve observed that overcrowded roads lead to not just inconvenience, but serious issues such as:
Increased road accidents,
Delayed emergency response,
Air pollution due to vehicle emissions,
Wasted fuel and productivity.
This constant observation inspired me to build TrafFix, a smart traffic system that uses real-time data, AI, and live CCTV feeds to reduce congestion and improve urban safety and mobility. My goal: If we can reduce traffic, we can reduce accidents, improve air quality, and save lives.
How I Built It: I designed and developed TrafFix using a combination of modern web technologies, machine learning, and real-time data sources:
External APIs & Data: Google Maps Platform (for routing, real-time traffic, nearby places, location tracking)
OpenWeatherMap API (for real-time weather and air quality data)
Gemini API (for AI Assistant chat to answer users' questions)
What I Learned: This project taught me more than just programming. I learned:
How to work with real-world APIs and integrate them securely.
The importance of data accuracy in decision-making tools.
How AI can provide smart responses to reduce human effort.
How to stream live camera feeds using RTSP and FFmpeg.
The impact of traffic data on urban planning and sustainability.
Challenges I Faced: API Key Limits: Free versions had request limits, so some data didn’t update live every time.
CCTV Streaming: Setting up real-time camera feeds required RTSP knowledge and good internet bandwidth.
Cost Management: Premium APIs cost money, so I had to carefully balance features using free developer plans.
Data Privacy: Ensuring data security and privacy especially when using live location and camera streams.
Final Thoughts: TrafFix isn’t just a project — it’s a step towards solving a real-world problem using modern technology. By combining AI, live data, and automation, we can empower city authorities and the public to take smart actions. This platform is scalable and can be used by:
Government traffic control departments
Smart city initiatives
Emergency service dispatchers
Environmental monitoring agencies
With just a few improvements and API upgrades, TrafFix is ready to serve real cities and save real lives.
