We wanted to use NuPIC to understand regular traffic patterns in NYC. With this knowledge, we could recommend route changes immediately when traffic diverges from its normal pattern. Although Google Maps shows where there are traffic slowdowns, it cannot understand when slowdowns are worse than the expected traffic slowdowns. With NuPIC, we detect anomalies from the normal traffic flows, even when slowdowns are worse than normal. It can also show when traffic is faster than normal!
We use the [NYC DOT real-time traffic speed feed][http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/about/datafeeds.shtml#realtime] to continually load data into NuPIC.
